Here's what Race and Gender Mean to Me

0

That's right.  Nothing.  Zlitch.  Nada.  Goose-egg.  I've seen a lot of talk on this blog and others about how we need to vote for Hillary because she's a woman and we need to make history.  I've also seen a lot of talk about how Obama will make history as the first African-American president.  I've even seen some shallow people say we need to vote for Edwards because Americans not ready for either a woman or a black man.

But let me tell you this MyDD.  I am a die-hard Obama supporter.  I half-white and half-Latino.  I am a male.  And I do not care one iota about Barack's race or Hillary's gender or Mitt's religion.  I care about one thing...who will be the best president of the United States.  That answer for me is Barack Obama, and I'd be supporting him if was white, black, Asian, Latino, a man, a woman, gay or straight.  The best way to make history is not to simply elect someone because they look differently.  The best way to make history is to elect someone who ACTS differently.  If people honestly feel that Hillary would make a better president and will cruise to victory in November then please, cast your vote for her.  I welcome the debate.

I've been working for Obama for almost a year now, and I've met more people involved in this campaign than I ever though I'd meet in a lifetime.  And you know what?  Not a single one of them as EVER said "Won't it be great to have a black president?!"  What I have heard is "Won't it be great to have a president who cares helping kids pay for college.  Won't it be great to have a president who can restore our reputation around the world.  Won't be great to have a president who will yes fight Republicans tooth and nail but won't denigrate the other side and restore CIVILITY to Washington. Won't it be great to have a president who can speak in complete sentences!"

I'm not voting for Obama because he's black or male.  I'm not voting against Hillary because she's white or a woman.  I'm voting for Obama for one reason...he would make a better President.

side point (2.00 / 1)

i really wanted to get in and make a comment in this diary, and i thank jonathan for sending me my log in info.

race means something to me, but not in the way that people are thinking and not with the issues that the msm is framing.  I decided to support a candidate (to be fully honest, i'm still not all that gung ho about any of the candidates this election despite how critical it is, not only to the progressive movement, but to the country), and their race or gender doesn't mean anything to me.  all i care about is what's going to make this country better.

as noted, this was a side point.  I really want to know their raical views on ... Asian Americans.  Well, not their "views" on Asian Americans, but how they would reach out to the AA community, in particular, AA youths.  I just haven't heard many comments by any of these candidates on AA related issues, which is somewhat disheartening.

Not sure abuot the other candidates (none / 0)

but I know Obama's been working hard to get the Asian American vote.  He spent part of his childhood in Indonesia and has a half-Indonesian half-sister.

Re: Not sure abuot the other candidates (none / 0)

See, and this is a general comment on all candidates, I want to know how they would reach out.  I want to see them go to heavy AA places and talk about the issues.  Granted, the reality is, the AA voice has increased, but it's still not one that's going to, how do we put it nicely, attract attention.  Maybe there's been events I've missed.  I'm just not big on endorsements.  I want to know why I should support their AA initiatives.

but again, i fully understand the realities of the game.

i am refering to asian americans.  sorry, i tend to forget that, politically, apia is the more commonly used acronym.  also, by "attract attention", i'm just referencing how the asian american voice isn't exactly a strong one in society.  just didn't want to give the wrong impressions.
